crochet & complaints

Not much progress on the blanket, just some pretty Pinterest pics & patterns (crochet, of course) to share with you, and then a complaining session about knitting.

Look at this different way to join granny squares!  I never thought of this.

This gorgeous cardigan might be in the works soon for myself, I just love it so much!

This pillow pal pattern is so cute, and they have other animals available, too!  I have a Pillow Pet myself, and I love it!

Also for kids, this cute mobile!  I’ll have to remember this years into the future when I finally get around to having kids.

And now for my knitting complaint (but crocheters can relate, too).  I like knitting, and I like the idea of wooden/bamboo needles to help prevent slippage that may occur on metal needles.  This is the kind of needles I’ve been getting at the local yarn store:

I like almost every aspect about these.  They are smooth, the join to the cord is virtually seamless, the cords are nice and bendy, and they are warm in the hands.  Much like bamboo crochet hooks, in fact.

My problem with the needles is that when I use them for stitches that are naturally tight, like k2tog or something like that, they can splinter.  On more than one circular set I’ve peeled off little strips of bamboo at the tip.  Not good.  Am I just making my stitches too tight, or does this happen to crocheters, too, who hook tightly?  Is it just this brand?  I don’t know.  Should I try another wood brand, or should I just switch to metal and be done with it (while having to deal with slippery, cold needles)?

progress

The blanket/afghan is already looking good!

I’m excited.  The diamonds kind of look like little stamps, or maybe little patchwork squares sewn roughly together… cute!

By the way, this pattern is not easy on hands.  Just a few rows and my right hand starts aching.  I’ll keep on keepin’ on, though!  More progress soon!

and we’re off!

It’s nice and rainy here, so I’ll be working more this evening, but here’s what I’ve got so far:

The red row has those holes at the bottom where the chain was stretched out, but I hope that will be minimized when I put a border on the blanket and even out the chain stitches a bit.

I’m off to hook some more!  I think I’ll take this to class tonight…

update!

Sorry for posting twice in one day, I’m just excited to share with you: my new project is going to be a blanket, despite what I said earlier!  I know I’ve made a lot of blankets — in fact we have 3 in our living room right now — but I really like the big projects that take time because the sense of accomplishment is so great, and I can always give it as a gift to someone really special if the need ever arises.  Now I know I said I’d never use Berroco Vintage Chunky again for a blanket due to expense, but there’s just nothing like it, and I plan on making a smaller throw anyway so it won’t take  nearly as much yarn as my large previous blankets.  Here are my colors:

I have 2 skeins each of grey, light blue, light pink, red, yellow, pink, denim, and a bluish-teal color.  I was trying to go kinda Cath Kidston-y, and although this may make a darker blanket than I originally planned, I’m excited about the color combo anyway.  I think it’ll look great!

Here’s the pattern I’m going to use:

That picture is from Sarah London’s pattern page, but there’s also a similar (if not the same) pattern on the Lion Brand website, with an added ruffly border to add if desired.

I’m going to work on it right now — wish me luck!

this past week

Sorry it’s been over a week since I’ve posted!  I have no excuse — it’s not like I’ve been doing anything.  Well, I’ve actually been knitting my first sock ever (from the toe up) and just finished the toe, which I’m super proud of, but I’m not going to share pics with ya’ll until I’m finished because I don’t want to inundate my crochet site with knitting posts!  (And yes I just said “ya’ll” — it’s a product of me living in the deep south for 8 years.)

So….. crochet.  I’m trying to think of a new project that won’t take up tons of yarn, because I don’t have tons of money to dish out for it.  Much as I would like to start a blanket, I feel like that’s just not gonna happen unless I win the lottery, and I just can’t face making anything with Red Heart, despite its cheapness.  So I’m searching the web, other blogs and Pinterest  being my main sources of inspiration, for something new.  Here are some new cool things that I found on Pinterest just today:

This free bag pattern from Lion Brand looks trendy, since the whole diamonds/chevron thing is in right now.

And I really want to do some yarnbombing, but I feel like I need an accomplice or two (or five) to get it done fast, and I don’t have any crochet buddies in town!  I love this flower garden on the fence.

That’s all for today.  I’ll try to get more stuff soon, though.

And if you’re interested in reading books, I highly recommend The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.  That book is the first three of the Pern novels written by Anne, and although there are lots more, those are the ones to start with.  This is my second favorite series ever, next only to Harry Potter, which I love so much I got a tattoo on my arm.  Anyway, here’s the book, linked to Amazon:

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy (with a little hint of sci-fi).  Let me know what you think if you ever read it!

pretties from Pinterest

I get lots of my crochet ideas and patterns from browsing Pinterest.  There’s just so much cool stuff there, so today I have some things to show you that I just found.  No knitting stuff today, just crochet!

This bolster pillow doesn’t have a pattern to follow, but it looks doable by just looking at all the pictures and experimenting.

This granny square with a flower in the center has a pattern available here.

The wooleater by Sarah London is great for everything from potholders to blankets!  Free pattern here.

This picture is from one loop short, but the pattern is from here.

The African flower pattern is very popular right now, and there’s a great tutorial here!

So that’s all for today as far as Pinterest goes.  I think I’m headed to the yarn shop later this afternoon so there may be another post later with new stuff!  We’ll see.

potholder madness!

Yes, I made another one!  Made with Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic yarn), this will be just a decoration — I won’t actually use it because I don’t want to melt it.  This one’s a simple granny square backed with a square made of double crochet.

Sticking with my Cath Kidston-y colors!  I love it so much!

Sorry if you think potholders are boring, and are therefore tired of my multiple potholder posts.  I just think they’re so homey and quaint (in the best sense)!  I might make one more out of the same colors so that I have three that match and can hang them in a group.

double take

I liked the first potholder so much that I made another one today, with the exact same pattern, just different yarn.  This time I used Berocco Vintage Chunky, which is only 50% acrylic and therefore less likely to melt on my hand if in use.  I think the first one would be OK, but I don’t want to chance it.  So anyway, here is potholder #2:

I used the leftover yarn from my flower sunburst granny square blanket.  I think it turned out really nice, even though it’s very large.  This one is 11″ wide, while the first one was only 8.5″ wide:

Despite the large size,  I really like it.  I’m going to give this one away as a gift, actually, but I’ll keep the first one.

Thanks for stopping by today!

back to hooking

After all this knitting, I realized I was neglecting crochet horrendously.  I therefore looked up a new pattern that I hadn’t tried yet and made an ornamental potholder!

Ta-da!  I found this on Ravelry, which sent me to this original pattern from Crochet with Raymond.  I did a few things in the pattern my own way, like centering the granny increases in row 7 to be above the petals, but I really do like this pattern!  The center motif is called an African flower, and it’s becoming quite popular these days in all kinds of projects.  I had a bit of trouble in a couple of places, just being uncertain exactly what the pattern meant, but I think I succeeded.

The pattern calls for a back layer, which you can see through the granny gaps, and that really does make it suitable for picking up hot kitchen items.  I’m afraid I won’t be using mine for that, however, because I used Caron Simply Soft yarn and I’m scared that the acrylic would melt on my hand instantly on contact with a hot pan, or something like that.  Scary.  I think I’ll just hang it above my kitchen sink to add some cheer to my dismal 1970s typical apartment kitchen.

I might make more potholders soon to hang beside this one — I think they’re really charming, even though the idea of hanging potholders is very old-fashioned.  I remember my grandma had some hanging on her kitchen wall when I was little.  Although the idea is an old one, I think it can be done in a pretty, modern way.  That’s what I’m trying to do, anyway.  Let me know if I’m failing.  It just seems so cheery and homey, which I’ve been big into lately.  Well, I’m out for the night — it’s past 2 am here and time for bed!

a hat and other pretties

With  exactly one skein of my new yarn, I’ve knitted a hat today.  I love it!  The first pic is blurry, my apologies:

That’s the sort of striping I was after.  I’m pleased.  Now what to do with the other skein… hmm…

For a little hooky (and needle-y) inspiration, I give you some new-found patterns and pictures!

crochet

There’s not a pattern for these, but I thought they were gorgeous Christmas ornaments and I’m sure they could be easily improvised.

This cute beach cover-up is going to be a must-make for the summer, I think.  Pattern here!

This cute pinwheel cushion pattern is free on Ravelry.

This different blanket pattern is gorgeous, and also free on Ravelry.  The pattern’s in French, but there’s a chart, so it’s understandable.

knitting

Such a cute vest pattern, and it’s free here.

I’m not sure about knitting socks yet, but this free pattern might be the first one I try.

So that’s it for the day!  Hope you’ve enjoyed both my hat and the other lovelies.  See you soon!
